Vila-Matas’s hunchbacked narrator shares with the reader his footnoted Bartlebyan thesis of the No, and when you read this book, you just might come away with re-definitions, new filters.

Why else would you write such a book of half-baked philosophy and limited entertainment or educational value? Bottomline, a very innovative approach in storytelling. In another one, the narrator recounts an old schoolboy friendship that ends in a very unexpected way. The many who believe they have a book in them, or are haunted by the feeling that there is something they want to set down in words suggests that maybe more than one per cent of humanity isn’t of the purest Bartleby-sort, but since most don’t actually manage to make much of their vague dreams it does indeed seem to be a Bartleby-peopled planet.

Each sub-story is about a writer he claims to be a “Bartleby”. And at one point, the narrator summarizes a book I’d really like to read, but I can’t remember the name and I can’t find it in the book, unfortunately, so I can’t say what it is at the moment.
